LESSON THREE: GOD THE FATHER
1. GOD IS
a. The Bible does not try to prove the
existence of God. It is a testimony and history of
God's
relationship with people, especially the Jewish people. They had
a special name for God which is used over 6800 times in the Old
Testament.
Usually translated into English as the Lord, it is literally YHWH,
which
we pronounce as Yahweh. God's name was never written with vowels
because it was so special the people would not speak his name.
b. What is the meaning of God's special name, Yahweh? Exodus 3:13-14
2. WHAT IS GOD LIKE?
Look up each verse and list a characteristic
of God.
a. John 4:24
b. Psalm 139:7-8
c. Genesis 1:1
d. Psalm 90:2
e. Isaiah 6:3
f. Deuteronomy 7:21
g. Malachi 3:6
h. Psalm 145:8
3. GOD AS FATHER
a. The Old Testament paints a portrait
of God who is stern, just, holy, and awesome. But we
cannot overlook the fact that it also paints
God as loving and merciful. In the New Testament Jesus builds on
that loving image by calling God "abba" which translates to a young
child
saying "daddy". Mark 14:36
b. In the Lord's Prayer Jesus teaches
us how we should pray and relate to God.
How are we to relate to God? Matthew
6:9
c. If God is our Father, what are we? Galatians 4:4-6
4. THE LOVE OF GOD
a. How did God demonstrate his love
to you? Romans 5:8
b. How do you experience God's love each day? 1 John 4:7-8
